For the Gauss Prize Lieb is recognized for "deep mathematical contributions of exceptional breadth which have shaped the fields of quantum mechanics, statistical mechanics, computational chemistry, and quantum information theory." The Gauss Prize, awarded jointly by the Deutsche Mathematiker-Vereinigung (GermanÌýMathematical Union) and the International Mathematical Union, honors scientists whose mathematical research has had an impact outside mathematics – either in technology, in business, or simply in people's everyday lives.
The Dirac Medal, awarded by the International Centre for Theoretical Physics, noted Lieb's "for groundbreaking and mathematically rigorous contributions to the understanding of the statistical mechanics of classical and quantum physical systems". Lieb shares this year's Dirac Medal with Joel Lebowitz of Rutgers University and David Ruelle of the Institut des Hautes Études Scientifiques.
