In this little survey talk, I shall discuss minimizing maps into spheres of various dimensions. Of particular interests are minimizing maps in homotopy classes and the related "relaxed energies鈥 and "defect measures". A notion of Jacobian and its connection to the (local) topological singularities come into play. There remain several challenging open questions. 听听
